Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with The Commonwealth Craftsman.

🏠 General

  • We specialize in high-end residential interior and exterior painting, cabinet and furniture finishing, decorative finishes including Venetian plaster and limewash, trim and millwork painting, and color consultation services. Every project is approached with the same discipline — careful preparation, premium materials, and precise execution.

  • Yes — we offer free, no-obligation estimates for all projects. We conduct an on-site visit to assess the scope of work, discuss your vision, and provide a detailed written proposal. Response time is typically within 2–3 business days.

  • Yes. The Commonwealth Craftsman is fully licensed and insured in the state of Colorado. We carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage on every project. Documentation is available upon request.

  • We proudly serve Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Timnath, Berthoud, Longmont, Erie, Broomfield, Centennial, Thornton, Boulder, and surrounding Northern Colorado and Front Range communities.

🖌️ Process & Preparation

  • We thoroughly clean all surfaces, repair cracks, holes, and imperfections, sand to ensure proper adhesion, and apply appropriate primers before any paint is applied. For cabinetry and fine woodwork, we take additional steps to ensure a factory-quality finish.

  • A single room typically takes 1–2 days. A full interior can range from one to three weeks. We provide a detailed project timeline during the estimate process so you always know what to expect.

  • We ask that you clear the room as much as possible before we arrive. We'll move light remaining furniture, cover everything with drop cloths, and protect your floors throughout the project.

  • We offer low-VOC and zero-VOC paint options that are much better for air quality, making it comfortable to remain in the home during painting. Good ventilation — open windows and fans — is still recommended.

Tip: If you have young children, pets, or respiratory sensitivities, ask us about our low-VOC product options.

🎨 Paint & Materials

  • We use professional-grade paints from trusted brands like Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and PPG. These products offer better coverage, durability, and color retention compared to contractor-grade alternatives.

  • Yes, we can work with client-supplied paint. However, please note that we cannot warranty the finish quality if the paint underperforms. We'll let you know upfront if we have any concerns about the product you've chosen.

  • Yes. We offer color consultation as part of our service process. We evaluate your home's architecture, lighting, existing finishes, and your personal preferences to recommend palettes that feel intentional and cohesive.

  • Flat / Matte — Ceilings and low-traffic walls
Eggshell / Satin — Most interior walls
Semi-gloss / Gloss — Trim, doors, kitchens, bathrooms

Tip: When in doubt, satin is a safe, versatile choice for living spaces — easy to clean and not too shiny.

📅 Scheduling

  • Start dates depend on our current schedule. We'll always give you an honest availability window — typically we can book within one to three weeks. Reach out early for larger or time-sensitive projects.

  • Exterior painting requires dry conditions and appropriate temperatures. If rain is in the forecast, we'll pause work and reschedule affected days. We monitor weather closely and will communicate any changes promptly so you're never left in the dark.

💳 Payment

  • We typically require a deposit of 25–33% to cover materials and secure your spot on the schedule. The remaining balance is due upon project completion and your approval at the final walkthrough.

Note: Be cautious of any contractor requesting more than 50% upfront — this is not standard practice.
  • We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards. We use digital invoicing for convenience — you'll receive a clear, itemized invoice before any payment is due.

⭐ Quality & Aftercare

  • Yes — we stand behind our work with a 2-year labor warranty. If you notice peeling, blistering, or workmanship defects within that period, we'll return and make it right at no charge. The warranty applies to our standard prep and application process using professional-grade paints.

  • Your satisfaction is our top priority. Before we collect final payment, we do a full walkthrough with you to review the work. Any touch-ups or concerns identified during that walkthrough will be addressed before we consider the job complete.

  • A few simple habits will keep your paint looking great for years:

✦ Clean walls with mild soap and warm water — avoid abrasive scrubbers
✦ Touch up scuffs and chips early before they grow
✦ Avoid flat paints in high-traffic areas where scrubbing may be needed
✦ Keep a small container of your wall color for future touch-ups

Tip: We always label leftover paint cans with the room and color for your records.
  • Simply reach out through our contact page or call us directly. We'll schedule a site visit, discuss your project goals, and provide a detailed estimate covering everything from scheduling to final walkthrough.
